So you think your website is performing

True facts about websites we have monitored over the past few years. These examples go to show how important it is to monitor your website. You are then better placed to make your website perform better.

Visitors and unique visitors explained
After 2 days it became apparent that Mr Jones’s 700 or so visitors each month for the past 2 years were his own staff. All 31 computers in the company were set to open their own company’s home page up on start up each morning.

Mr Jones now knows why, that despite his hosting provider telling him he had 700 visitors a month, he never received one sales enquiry over a 2 year period.

Paid for links to your website from on-line directories
After one month’s monitoring Mr Smith was inclined to agree that spending over £2,000 over a 3 year period for a link on a popular on-line directory believing it sent hundred of visitors to his site was not the best use of his marketing budget. No visitors were sent to his website during the first month, only one over the following 6 month period.

This does not imply paid links do not work, indeed they can - it’s like any media, one size doesn’t fit all.

Search engine friendly websites and pages are a must
After spending £5,000 with another company on a website overhaul and pleased with the new design Mr Brown felt like he’d been hit by Mike Tyson when he was informed after one month’s monitoring that he hadn’t received one visitor via the search engines. Perhaps the serious lack of any meta tags and poor body content didn’t help.

It doesn’t matter how good the website looks if people can’t find it.
