I had a meeting recently with a company who felt their existing website looked a bit old fashioned and in need of a design update. We start by monitoring the existing website for a period The stats can give us vital information that will help in the building or marketing of the new website. I cannot stress how important it is to understand the 'equity' that has been built up on the existing website before embarking on a new website - even if it does look a bit old fashioned. Equity could include pages within the website that appear on the first page of google and are responsible for delivering quality visitors to the website. It may even mean tools that exist to gather or deliver information. In this instance after monitoring the website we discovered a list of 6,800 emails all opted-in to receive news and offers. Certain pages even ranked highly on the company's key search terms. By evaluating the existing website we can build the new website without losing the existing equity. Sometimes it may not look good, but think twice about writing off the equity that can be built up over time.
