Peter Scutts, Managing Director of High Profile explains how: ‘Discover Gravesham’ is different, it's a 'people's museum', a display of material we have not only as a Borough but as a community and as individuals. Each collection will be named after the person who donates the material to give it that personal touch. It's a great way for everyone to be involved as well as leaving a legacy for the Borough and its community."
Collections on the ‘Discover Gravesham’ website include the civic paintings, roman artefacts, old postcards, photographs and even old business advertisements from nearly a 100 years ago, seen by few and now accessible throughout the world. Today's technology means that for the first time old ciné footage of Gravesham can be seen by visitors worldwide. Sid Whittaker's old cine footage shows the town as it was in the early 60's; the open air swimming pool, the River Thames and even the old A2 - this website really does take you back! ‘Discover Gravesham’ has a wealth of historical information underpinning the collections and is built to appeal to a wide audience including researchers, historians, educators, the local community and those who simply wish to reminisce. The website even has an on-line quiz to test your local knowledge! This is just the start and over the coming months a PR campaign will appeal for material to develop the project. Visitors can leave their email address so they can be notified of new material as the website grows. Funding from local business by way of page sponsorship will help keep future development costs to a minimum. You can view the Website at www.discovergravesham.co.uk |
