OK so this is not a new sales concept. So what does it tell us? Optimistic - A real bargain, cannot believe I'm getting one free....must have one...er...two. Now there are 2 further trains of thought, the first says they have now employed staff with excellent negotiating skills and purchasing goods at half the price. The second is, the price must be artificially inflated to make it look a real bargain when in fact we find ourselves purchasing 2 items when we only need one. As a single person, I find the whole supermarket 'buy one get one free' rather obscene resulting in a huge waste of food when we should now be looking at reducing wastage in this green eco friendly world we are all trying to create. Recently I walked into a local supermarket one lunchtime to purchase a single pork pie and found myself walking out with 16! They only sold them in packets of 8 and yep, you guessed it...it was 'buy one get one free'. The bottom line is this concept works, there isn't a supermarket in the country where they are not giving away items for 'Free'. Every isle, every checkout all you see are items that appear to be half price, yet you have to buy two. 29 million results in Google UK for the search term 'buy one get one free' should tell you consumers do buy into this concept. It has extended across many industries and even reached as far as the car industry! Love or hate it, it works...consider if this concept could benefit your products, only if it's food you're selling do all of us single people a favour and just sell the items at half price...you'll also be saving the planet!
